Before Facebook became a social media giant, there were other platforms that briefly captured the public’s attention. Unfortunately, they too failed social media networks to achieve lasting success.

Is Social Media a domain?

The pioneering site MySpace was launched in 2003 and quickly caught on as a social networking platform that appealed to internet-savvy teenagers around the world. It was a place to post photos, show off your music taste and even pioneer the selfie long before it got its name.

It was a great idea that caught on, but it was also flawed. It failed to evolve with the times, which ultimately led to its downfall.

Google Plus

This platform was built by Google and was launched in 2012, only to be shut down after a few years of struggling. While Google Plus was a great attempt to elbow its way into the social media space, it ended up being a failure.


While not as well-known as MySpace or Friendster, Ping was another failed social network that tried to go head-to-head with Facebook. It was launched by Steve Jobs and quickly lost its edge, as users started to switch to Facebook’s more user-friendly features.


The link aggregator website Digg was launched in 2004 and was designed to make it easier for people to share links. But it was overtaken by other social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.


The journey social networking platform Dopplr was launched by a team of entrepreneurs in the year 2007 and raised three rounds of funding. However, a combination of poor management and falling consumer dependence, lead to the company shutting down.
